Beef Bone Broth in the Instant Pot

This was my first time making beef bone broth in my Instant Pot IP-DUO60 7-in-1 Multi-Functional Pressure Cooker, 6Qt/1000W(IP) (aff link). It turned out great. I simply love the fact that I can have nutritious bone broth in 2 hours, plus time added for coming to pressure and cooling down - but still something that can be done in an afternoon rather than taking 2 days or more.   I used the basic same method as I use for chicken broth.

I started with 3#'s beef bones. I used some beef rib bones and beef marrow bones. To ensure that my broth gelled I added 3 chicken feet. I also cut up one onion and about 3 carrots and several chopped cloves of garlic.

I put these ingredients in the IP.

I then gathered together 6 cups water, 1 tablespoon salt and 2 tablespoons vinegar (helps pull out minerals from the bones).

I added this to the IP.

Put the lid on, set the sealing knob to “Sealing” and pressed “Manual”. I set the time for 120 minutes.

I did a natural pressure release when the time was up (just let the pressure come down on its own). When it was done it looked like this...

I strained out the bones using a strainer set inside a large bowl..

I pour the broth into a measuring cup..

I put it in the fridge overnight to let the fat solidify so I could remove it..

When it was done, it was nicely gelled (as I tried to show in this pic)..

This bone broth came at a good time. My youngest son got sick, then my daughter and I felt like we were coming down with something as well. It was helpful to have on hand. I also made a second batch during the week to keep us well supplied.

  1. I love my Instant Pot! This looks like a great recipe. Thank you! I was curious...have you ever canned meat or vegetables using your Instant Pot? I thought it would be very handy to use if I just wanted to can a jar or two of beef , or, if I had enough left from a meal, a small jar of spaghetti sauce. Or even the broth you just wrote about. It seems so much easier than dragging out my big canner. Thanks, Crystal! Have a great weekend!

    1. Kristina, a pressure cooker is not the same as a pressure canner. So, no, you can't can in them. With a pressure canner you need to be able to know your food is being held at a certain pressure for a certain amount of time. And the pressure might be different for different circumstances (altitude for instance, being one).

  2. Crystal, I have been happily reading through your lovely blog. It's always a delight to find another full time homemaker who is proud of her contribution to her husband's wellbeing. And you are the reason I bought an Instant Pot. Haven't tried the bone broth yet, savings up bones for that. Many years ago I got mononucleosis. For a week I was only just barely able to swallow very thin liquids and not much of that. At the end of that week, when I was just beginning to be able to swallow a bit, my best friend made me her mother's "Jewish mom's miracle cure"...chicken soup with matzo balls. It was absolutely the best meal I've ever had in my life! And yes that could well be because of not having eaten for a week! Ha. But you know, I felt an afoul lot better the next day. So who knows.
