Our Christmas … and when do you put your tree away?

We had a wonderful Christmas with the family. Not all of them could be here, but that seems to be the case more often than not nowadays. I have kids in other states and they were not able to make it home for the holidays.

But we did enjoy our time together. Lots of family time, good food, and grandbabies.

I made my granddaughters quilts for their gifts.. here is a pic of them.. I wanted them to be different, but basically the same. This way they would know which quilt was theirs! ~smile~ They are jelly roll race quilts with borders added so they would fit their twin size beds...

I'm a person that enjoy getting the Christmas tree up as soon as Thanksgiving is over. I like to decorate and enjoy the holiday time. But when it's over, I'm done. My husband had to work Christmas night (he works nights and was home for the day but then had to head to work in the evening). As soon as he left my daughter and I started taking down all the decorations and putting them away. I left the tree up until Friday morning, then put it away, moved all my furniture back where it belongs and cleaned up the house. It felt wonderful! ~smile~

I do this every year. Usually it is the day after Christmas. I've had a few of my friends tell me they do this as well.

I know everyone has their own traditions. I once had an older neighbor lady that said her and her husband would get the tree on the 24th of December, put the kids to bed, set it up, decorate it and put the gifts under the tree for the kids to see in the morning. Then they would leave the tree up until January 1st.

It just had me curious this year.... what is your tradition?

  1. My hubby's family tradition is to keep up until new years day. They believe its bad luck to take it down before. But, I'm ready for it to be down like right now. To be honest, I wanted to take it down Christmas night. I love the holidays and the reason for the season, but sadly, I wasnt in the holiday spirit this year and I'm ready for a new year with a new hope. :)

  2. The tree and all Christmas decorations are taken down the 26th here. I love the holidays but ready to move on after they are over.

  3. I put my tree up on December 1st, then pull it down no later than January 1st. Here in Australia we don't have real Christmas trees in our homes, as the hot weather makes them wilt quickly. So we have synthetic trees.

  5. I usually take mine down right after Christmas but this year I didn't put up a tree. I wrote about it here ~

Since I don't have a tree, I don't feel the urge to get rid of my other Christmas decorations which are not that much...lights, greenery, candles, all things that I love! Happy New Year!

  6. I usually put the tree up and decorate on Thanksgiving or the weekend after. My instinct is to take everything down the day after Christmas, but I know my husband and the kids like it up a little bit longer. I love everything when it is first set up and the coziness it adds to our home leading up to Christmas Day, but after that I cant help but see it all as one big mess that I need to clean up- haha. I know I sound like a scrooge! To me, when it's over, it's over and I am ready to move on. But as I said, I will probably leave it all out until New Years Day for the sake of the family.... if I can wait that long! ;)

  8. We took ours down today. Will keep outside decorations up until after then New Year. Like others, I am ready to get that clutter (good clutter) out of my way and everything back in its place.

  9. I usually take the tree and decorations down the day after. I love the Holidays, but taking down the decorations quickly feels cleansing. However, the youngest daughter (now a freshman in college) asked to leave the tree up the the 1st, so I agreed.

  10. I haven't commented on your blog for a long time ~ although I have been following ever since we've had internet! Anyhow this question required a comment ;)! (since you asked!)

We just started a tree tradion by chance last year: not normally wanting to have a tree, last year my hubby retaliated. On Christmas eve hubby ran out for a last minute something and returned with a tree - free from the local bigbox hardware. It was such a fun surprise and the kids (all 6) were so delighted (scrooge begon!) I had to give in with a smile!

This year they came back having only spent $10 for a live tree and stand. Purse holder approved! And since we don't get started until the last possible minute the tree stays until the pine needles (falling) drive any odd neatfreaks nuts...sadly that can take awhile - I've been known to leave my Christmas cards up passed Easter...

signed: admirer of your sense of organization!
Ps - the quilts are so lovely!

  12. I do what we always did as children. Christmas Eve the tree goes up and not before. The house is decorated beforehand, but not the tree. The tree then stays up until Epiphany (January 5). It comes down right after that. I always feel like I am celebrating the 12 days of Christmas.

  13. We have birch twigs that stand in the corner all year long. We use that as our "Christmas tree" in December. We decorate in early December and take down after December 25. We will take down this year decorations on December 29. This shouldn't take long since we adhere to the "less in more" mindset.

  14. We try to get our tree down on Thanksgiving night or the next day. My dad refuses to take it down until the Epiphany (first week of January). I've kept that tradition going.

  15. Love the quilts!

When I take down my tree depends on how tired I am of it! Some years it stays up til new years. Other years, it comes down much faster. :o)

  16. Growing up we had the tree up on Dec. 1st and down Jan. 1st. Now with my own little ones we put up the tree one Dec. first but take it down around noon on Christmas day. I leave the other decorations up till Jan. But being a family of 6 in a 12 by 60 trailer house we need the room for the kids to play. Once we are in the new house we might wait till Jan. again.
