Cooking with Cabbage

My garden is giving me lots of cabbage!! I have made two recipes that included cabbage so far and have coleslaw on the menu (was supposed to be on tonight’s menu but we had leftovers instead).

Here is what I have made so far…

Crockpot Pot Roast w/Cabbage, Onions & Garlic

This was soooo good!

1 large onion, sliced
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 3lb beef pot roast
Salt & pepper, to taste
1 head of cabbage, cut up

Put sliced onion and minced garlic in crockpot. Add pot roast and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Put cabbage around and on top of roast. Cook on low all day (8 to 10 hours) until meat is tender and falls apart.

I served this meal with baked sweet potatoes and a salad. Very yummy!!!

The second meal was hamburger sautéed with onions and garlic. I began by slicing a head of cabbage with my Bosch. You can use a food processor or do it by hand as well..

After that was done I cut up 1 large onion…

Then I cooked up 3lbs of hamburger and the onion…

When the hamburger was done cooking and the onion soft I began to add the cabbage. Raw cabbage takes up a lot of volume. So I added half of it and let it cook down a bit and then added the rest…

Add salt and pepper to taste. This recipe is very flexible. You can easily cut in half or thirds to feed fewer people than I was feeding. I served it with Laurie’s Macaroni & Cheese and a salad…

My family loves this meal. I have used sausage or chicken or kielbasa type sausage in place of the hamburger and it is still yummy! It is also a very quick meal to put together.

  1. I made the roast and it was delicious! I even made sweet potatoes to go with it, and I'm so glad I did. It was a nice change from the usual white potatoes!

    1. HI Sherri, I would think cooking it a low temp.. 300 or 325 for 3 to 4 hours (this could vary depending on the size of your roast) would work.. Crystal :)

  5. Our recipe for 'bierrocks' is the same as your hamburger/cabbage mix. Just make a couple loaves of your favorite bread dough, after risen once - pinch or slice enough up (flattened) to put 1/4 to 1/3 C of the meat mixture and wrap it up, sealing it well. I also put a half slice of cheese down first in ours, BEFORE the meat mixture, as my kids love these with cheese. When all are made, put in oven on cookie sheets and bake at 350 until golden brown. We let these cool, wrap and put in the freezer. Warm up in the micro wave, and you have one of the most delicious sandwiches to go that there is.
