The Guest Room

While raising 8 children one thing we never had in our home was a “guest room”. Whenever we had company here for the night someone would bunk with a sibling so our guests could use their room or with family they often would camp out in our living room. As my children have grown and moved I suddenly realized I had a room available to turn into a guest room.

My life has been so busy starting back in November with Emily’s wedding, then the holidays, my hand and the adjustments with moving my father in law in, that I had given up my hope to get this room cleaned out, painted and redecorated. But my incredible sister in law, Debbie, has been staying with us and helping us out in so many ways. She and I are not just sisters in law, but much more like sisters. We have the best relationship and I feel truly blessed. She saw the room, listened to my desire to turn it into a guest room and was more than willing to jump in and tackle the project.

I really wish I’d taken before pictures. The room was filled with junk left behind by kids and in desperate need for a fresh coat of paint. She cleaned out the room and painted it. After that it was time to decorate. She knew I was working on a limited budget. She has to be the world’s best deal finder. Pretty much everything in the room came from Craigslist, Goodwill/thrift stores or garage sales. The few things she did purchase were pillows and a few dried flowers.

When she finished the project we calculated what it would have cost to purchase everything brand new and came up with a price around $2000+ .. bed frame, mattress, end table, bookcase, bedding, curtains, rug, etc.. I figured everything (including paint) came to about $500. The desk and dresser where furniture I already had in the room.

Sierra took some pics for me to share of this project. Our house is an older farm house and the room is small and ceilings are slanted so it was a challenge to bring it all together…

I see talent runs in your family. I cannot have sugar though. Use stevia.
Curious.........I clicked on your Peppermint Mocha Creamer and it calls for can juice crystals. Could you explain what that is and where to buy it????

    Thanks a lot.

    1. Hi Anon, I thought I had answered this.. but it must have been for someone else.. sorry it has taken so long for me to reply. I have a page on my website explaining cane juice crystals: http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/organicsugar.htm As far as I understand, if you can not have sugar then you would not be able to use cane juice crystals either.

  8. Great job, Crystal, the room looks great! Our two upstairs bedrooms have slanted walls also, and we have a sleigh bed just like yours! We don't use it anymore though, we now have an antique iron bed.
