Proverbs 31:10

Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies

Every now and again in my Bible studies I like to come back and read about the Proverbs 31 woman. Each time a different verse will really stand out to me. Today it was verse 10. I spent a great deal of time on studying the word virtuous. I first went to the online dictionary and it said: “characterized by or possessing virtue or moral excellence; righteous; upright” and I looked up virtue: “Moral excellence and righteousness; goodness”

Then I went searching for the word in Hebrew and the word used in this verse is “Chayil” … and it means: “strength, might, efficiency, wealth, army” ( http://www.studylight.org/lex/heb/view.cgi?number=02428 )

When viewing both definitions I see a woman whose strength is in her character and she possessed a wealth of righteousness and goodness. This “moral excellence” comes from our spiritual walk with the Lord. It comes from time spent in the Word, knowing the heart of God, His Word and the help of the Holy Spirit in our lives to make right choices each and every day.

And she also had physical strength as well if you read about the work of her daily life. It takes strength to accomplish the work of a homemaker. How many nights have we all fallen into bed exhausted from having cared for our families, cooking meals, cleaning the house and managing other responsibilities in our daily life? I think it would be hard to argue the fact that physical strength is also part of this.

And women like this are hard to find… “her worth is far above rubies”… rare gems. Not ordinary rocks you can find anywhere.. but rare gems.

May we all walk into 2012 with the desire to grow in our relationship with the Lord, rise up to the daily tasks of life and shine like rare gems…

  1. You know, the rare gems are becoming rarer! Harder to find. there are so many young ladies in our community (and family) that just think they can lay around, play games on facebook, and live in filth. I pray hard for the next generation. They aren't being taught to be virtuous wives (young women).

  2. Thank you for posting this. I am a young mother of 3 precious girls, one an infant the others are 8 and 5 and I homeschool them. I too, try to be a Proverbs 31 woman and try to be an excellent wife, mother and homemaker. It is a very difficult job and I am sometimes looked at "weirdly" for lack of a better word for being home a lot caring for my family in what others see as old-fashioned. I take time in our kitchen to prepare nutritious from scratch meals, and our girls enjoy helping me. Many tell me I'm wasting time doing that, buy pre-packaged. We try to live a simple life, and in today's world, it seems as if it's almost frowned upon. I love reading your blog; it's great to see there are others out there, who try to live the simple life, finding joy at home and with a heart on fire for the Lord. God bless! Blessings, Jamie

  3. Thank you for those words. I am a believer of starting the day in His word, and not falling into the trap of feeling sorry for myself but realizing how glorious it is to serve our Lord through my family.
    God bless,
    Jeanna
