Hot Process Soap Making – New Video!

Making soap is fun and rewarding. It can be scary to start out but once you do it you realize how simple it is. And you realize how useful it is! I know my family and I could never go back to store bought soap.

In this video I'm showing you how to make hot process soap in a crockpot. There are 2 ways to make soap. One is called Cold Process and the other Hot Process. Here is the difference...

CP - This stands for Cold Processing. This is a soap making method. This is the method I use for making soap to sell. It involves combining your liquid/lye mixture with your oils and stirring until you reach trace (as defined below). Then pouring the mixture into molds. In a day or two you unmold, cut the bars and let the soap cure anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks depending on the recipe.

HP – This stands for Hot Processing. You follow the same procedures as CP but instead of pouring into your mold you keep cooking the soap. The soap is heated and cooked all the way through to the end. After you remove it from the mold you can cut the bars and pretty much use them right away.

I think hot process soap making is easier for the home soap maker, and you have usable bars of soap much sooner.

I use my older (like 20+ years old) crockpot for making soap in. In my opinion you do not need a separate crockpot for making soap. I've used this same crockpot often for soap making and for cooking in. When you are done making soap, you have soap, which is what you use to clean your crockpot with. It is entirely up to you if you want a dedicated crockpot for soap making.

  5. Hi. I am new in making soap and I found this very helpful. I found sodium hydroxide in the rosary store but it does not show concentration. Can I still use it?

    1. It must be 100% sodium hydroxide in order to use it for soap making.. If you don't know, then I would not use it.

  8. Loved your hp soap video.
I Dnt knw what I'm doing wrong with my HP soap. Over-cooking? Under-cooking? It comes out so lumpy & unappealing... By the time it comes out of the mold the top sometimes crumbles - small pieces... Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong

    1. It is hard to say.. one reason for crumbly soap is that is too heavy in lye.. have you double checked your recipe? It could be the oils you are using... I'd say check your recipe with a lye calculator and/or try a different recipe.. the one posted above works every time for me.. without issue..

  9. Thanks for your response. I Dnt think so- I've used different recipes & I usually superfat @6% & use a lye calculator always & have used different recipes. Ok, will keep trying to figure it out. Thanks

    1. To much superfatting can also cause the same problem as being lye heavy (crumbly soap)... also could be not enough water. I often use the higher range of water in a soap recipe when making hp soap, also it could be not enough stirring while you are making the soap.. I hope you are able to figure it out soon..

  10. What is Palm oil? Can a different oil be substituted for the palm oil, like Jojoba.?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Palm oil is a common oil used in soap making. All oils require a different amount of lye. Also there are recommended percentages of oils (by weight) in recipes. Usually jojoba is used in very small quantities. You would need to check on a lye calculator (found online) before making any changes. Palm oil can be found online.. the links I've shared above will have it.

  12. Wondering if you can use Lorann flavor oils in soap making? I have several large bottles that I worry will not be used in my baking...so I thought why not use it up in my soap. I have a lot of coconut flavor oil and probably will never use it up unless I put it in soap.

    1. Hi Tanya, I've never used flavor oils in soap making so I don't have any experience with them at all.. I really can't help you with this. You might want to try a Google search and see what comes up..

  15. can you use goats milk in place of the water?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Goat milk soap is made differently then water based soaps. If the temps are too high you will scorch the milk and it will turn your soap into not so pretty burnt orange color. I would not recommend substituting goats milk for water in hot processed soap. Crystal :)
