Winter Wood Gathering

We heat with wood… it is our only option. We do not have other adequate means of heating our home unless we were to put in an entire heating system (furnace, ducts, etc..). So each year my guys begin the journey of bringing in about 6 cords of wood from our property. I have to say I am incredibly proud of my boys.. or young men I should say.. they both know how to put in a full day’s work and they enjoy it! Without their help it would be a long arduous process for my already over worked hubby.. we could not be more thankful for their cooperation and help! We are a little over half way there now!

Unloading a tractor load of wood…

Jacob bringing in another load of wood… he cuts the trees and cuts it into chunks, fills the tractor bucket and then brings it down for Tobin to split and stack…

Lunch break! I keep the guys well fed while they are working….

Heading off for another load…

A little over half way there..

It’s a good feeling to get a such a great start to gathering the winter wood..

  1. There is a sense of satisfacation of getting things ready for winter. You are so blessed to be able to gather wood from your own property for heating!

  2. I love to see children in a family contribute to the family's well being. The boys honored you with their hard work. And, it's so nice that you can get your wood in early.

  3. Just found your blog and LOVE every bit of it!!
I have a quick question, how many fireplaces/wood burning stoves do you have? And how cold does it get where you live?

    1. Hi Bernice.. we live in an old home and it came with a wood burning furnace.. you can't find them anymore.. it is large and sits in the basement. There is a grate in the living room where the heat comes up. and then we have a fan that blows the heat upstairs. It does a great job keeping the house warm.

Our winters typically hover in the upper 20's to mid 30's. We get some snow and ice but not a whole lot. It can get into the teens but that does not happen each year and when it does it usually only lasts a short time then we are back to the 20's & 30's..

But we have very wet cool falls and springs (rains a LOT - 75 to 100 inches a year). We start heating sometime in October and can heat until June! I've had plenty of days this month that I had to have a fire to take the chill off the house.

      Crystal :)
