Curriculum Choices

It’s that time of year again!  Time to make curriculum choices for the upcoming school year.   With only two students in my homeschool now and a lot of experience the choices to be made do not seem as overwhelming as they did years ago.

This year I am making one change from the norm.  For the last many years we have used Saxon math.  We have loved it.   All my children went through Advanced Math and one Calculus.  My husband has always been the math teacher (math is his strong point).  Well the last two years have been incredibly busy for my husband (80 hour weeks sometimes) and so I took over the math teaching with the help of my son Jacob (who was the one that did the calculus book).   But this year my son has also gotten busy and while I did take algebra, geometry and trig in high school…  that was a very LONG time ago!!   So I knew this year I needed to make a change for my daughter Sierra who is going into Algebra 2.  I purchased Teaching Textbooks after hearing such great reviews on it.   We will see how this goes for her this year.   Isaac will still be doing Algebra 1 through Saxon.

Last year for the first time I used Switched on Schoolhouse (SOS) with Isaac for English, science and history.  I LOVED it and he was very happy with it.  So that will be a repeat except in history.

For history I am going back to what I have used for my older children.  Sometimes what is tried and true is what works the best.   I have shared here on my blog how much I love having my children read good quality classic books.  Years ago I found a history curriculum that fit right in with my love for literature.  It is Beautiful Feet Books History Guides.  It is a study of historical time periods thru literature.  It is a fantastic way (in my opinion :) to get a real “feel” for each time of history through books.

So here is the school lineup for my kids this year…

Isaac – Grade 9

English – SOS English
Science – SOS Science
Math – Saxon  Algebra 1
History – Beautiful  Feet History – US & World History

Sierra – Grade 11

English – Beautiful Feet History will give her all the literature and writing she needs
Science – Integrated Chemistry & Physics
Math – Teaching Textbooks Algebra 2
History – Beautiful Feet History - Ancient History Through Literature

That is the basic core of this year’s studies.  They will also be pursuing other personal interests as well..

  1. Blessings as you go into another year of schooling. Your posts have been such a blessing and encouragement to me. I don't even remember how I found you, but it is high time I let you know how you bless me. I am in somewhat the same stage of life. I have six children. My youngest graduated high school May of this year. I have two married children and two beautiful granddaughters.I am especially encouraged by the way you love and support your children as they grow up, pursue their own interests, and "leave the nest". That is always an easy thing. Thank you. Janet

  3. Hi Crystal,
Thank you for your great posts, I am always encouraged! I have a totally unrelated question . . . When you make your simple feta, you say to let it age for a few days . . . Do you leave it out on the counter to do this?
    Thank you!
    Carolyn
